STARTS IN APRIL (availability is from March 31st onwards) If you are serious about writing poetry, or even just a serious poetry reader, then join me for a guide to the poetry of London, while also having the chance to work together on your own writing inspired by the wanderings we will take. A particular focus will be south of the river, the docklands, and the square mile (the old city of London). Explore the worlds of - and delve into - Shakespeare, William Blake, Arthur Rimbaud and others and investigate the liminal places of London that have inspired many London poets. I will also be able to support your writing in online classes. You may have written for a long time, or just be taking a first step to find a safe environment to share your work with someone else. Writing can be such an enriching practice (which may even transform your life), but this doesn't mean it is easy or fulfilling all the way. There are bumps and blocks and tensions... one great way through them is to start to build a community... a good place to start can be to find someone to guide the process of writing and finding ways to support your creativity. I can also signpost to places to go and can guide you to group opportunities and communities, whatever your means. This is best done as a series of classes to reflect and work on your own work. I am a published poet and fiction writer and have worked as a writing tutor for 5 years. I have an MA in Creative Writing and am studying towards a PhD. I work as a writing mentor for poets and writers from many different backgrounds.

In a poetry class, students can expect to learn various aspects of poetry writing, appreciation, and analysis. Here's a brief summary of what can be learned in a typical poetry class: 1. Understanding Poetry Forms and Techniques: Students will learn about different forms of poetry such as sonnets, haikus, free verse, and more. They'll explore poetic devices like rhyme, meter, imagery, symbolism, and metaphor, and how these elements contribute to the overall meaning and impact of a poem. 2. Writing Poetry: Students will have opportunities to write their own poems, experimenting with different forms, styles, and themes. They'll receive feedback from peers and instructors to improve their craft and develop their unique voice as poets. 3. Exploring Poetic Themes and Subjects: Students will delve into various themes commonly found in poetry, such as love, nature, identity, social justice, and existentialism. They will analyse how poets explore and express these themes through their work. 4. Studying Poetic Traditions and Movements: Students will learn about the history of poetry, including major poetic movements and influential poets from different time periods and cultural backgrounds. They'll examine how poetry has evolved over time and its role in shaping society and culture. 5. Analysing and Interpreting Poetry: Students will develop skills in close reading and critical analysis, learning how to interpret poems and uncover deeper layers of meaning. They'll explore different approaches to literary criticism and apply these methods to a range of poetic texts. 6. Engaging with Contemporary Poetry: Students will engage with contemporary poetry from diverse voices and perspectives, exploring current trends and developments in the world of poetry. They'll discuss the relevance of poetry in today's society and its potential to address pressing issues and provoke thought and discussion. 7. Performing and Sharing Poetry: Students will be given opportunities to perform their own poems or those of others in spoken word events, poetry slams, or readings. They'll learn techniques for effective oral delivery and how to connect with an audience through their poetry. Overall, a poetry class offers a rich and immersive exploration of the art of poetry, providing students with the skills, knowledge, and appreciation to engage deeply with this timeless form of expression.

I am an experienced, engaging and versatile tutor of English Literature, Language, Creative Writing and Poetry. I have a BA in English Literature from Aberystwyth University, an MA in Critical Theory and Creative Writing from Sussex University, and a PhD in Critical Theory and Literature, also from Sussex. I am friendly and supportive, and work with a broad range of abilities and ages. I have tutored GCSE and A-level pupils at State schools across the UK, as well as students at independent schools such as Marlborough College, Bedales, Charterhouse and Hurtwood House. For five years I was also writer in residence at Hurtwood House. Previously, I taught English Literature and Critical Theory at Sussex University, and Creative Writing and Performance Skills at Brighton University. I frequently go into schools and colleges to run one-off enrichment sessions, and have developed standalone programmes for youth centres, arts centres, theatres and creative writing retreats. Whether you are looking for some help catching up after an absence, you need ongoing support with English Literature/Language/Creative Writing, or you’re just looking for some guidance and feedback on a particular essay/writing project I will be happy to help! I can also tailor longer courses specifically to meet your needs and/or interests. I am a writer, actor and stage manager by profession, and am the author of: poetry; poetry in translation; plays; academic writings; reviews/essays; and videogames. For more information, or to ask any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch. Meanwhile, all the best, Dr Rosy

Trusted teacher: My classes involve a mixture of discovering poetry in its diverse forms and responding to writing exercises. All activities have the aim of expanding the student's personal relationship with this incredible art form and developing their power to self-express creatively. We will look at how poetry continues to challenge the status quo and can act as a space for connection, emotional healing and rebirth in climates of limitation and struggle. I am passionate about teaching poetry writing because I have seen how beneficial the sharing and crafting of poetry is for mental health; I want to bring this passion into people's lives and am as excited to learn from each student's insights and creations as I am to impart knowledge and feedback. I am an experienced tutor and published poet with a first-class honours degree in English and Spanish from Durham University. My anthology "Poems of Hope", on the subject of mental health, was published in 2019 to fundraise for Mind UK. I am currently studying part-time postgraduate course in teaching creative writing with Cambridge University to complement writing and teaching. I have 5+ years of experience tutoring English and have devised and delivered poetry workshops for vulnerable adults as well as tutored creative writing throughout the pandemic. I have also spent a year working with SEN students in secondary education as a teaching assistant. I welcome teenagers and adults who identify as neurodivergent, disabled or struggling with mental health. I hope to hear from you and look forward to journeying into poetry together.
