English is a West Germanic language first spoken in early medieval England which eventually became the leading language of international discourse in today's world. It is named after the Angles, one of the ancient Germanic peoples that migrated to the area of Great Britain that later took their name, England. Over two billion people speak English (as of the 2000s), making English the largest language by number of speakers, and the third largest language by number of native speakers. It is very important to learn and understand English as it is the language of our international communication in all areas, such as politics, science, media or art and it is often the language of the entertainment as well as socializing. Having a good command of English helps us to have more opportunities in life, first of all our career.
