As an experienced tutor, I've realized that all students learn differently, so I change my teaching style according to what helps them learn best. I'll change the pace and include more practice if it's a particularly hard topic. If I'm teaching someone how to write an essay and they're very overwhelmed, I will model it for them and write the essay with them first, so the process is demystified and they can get a feel for how the ideas flow.
