Sigth-reading is a powerful tool to understand music theory, composition, phrase structure, form and analysis in general, in addition to improve music perception and help to sing in tune. Functional harmony leds musician to understand what is going on when their are playing the chords, the relations between chords, chords structures, what makes a harmony progression sounds like a rock, bossa nova or reggae and why some chords doesn't 'fit'. No doubt sight-reading and functional harmony will be useful for every musician!
