The course entitled ‘What is sociology?’ is taken from a textbook. The textbook is a comprehensive exploration of sociology, aimed at both students and educators. It explores various aspects of sociology and provides a rich understanding of social structures, institutions and their impact on human behaviour and the organisation of society. The course follows the same lines. It will cover, among other topics: 1- **Social structures and institutions** and their complex dynamics as well as institutions, highlighting their profound effects on human behaviour and the organisation of society. The importance of capturing these subtleties in order to better understand the evolution and transformation of society will be emphasised. 2- **Social Change and Movements**: We will explore the formidable forces of social change and the movements that shape human society. These movements reflect the aspirations and struggles of individuals and communities striving for a more equitable world. 3- **Sociology of Religion**: An overview will be given of how religion influences and is influenced by social structures, cultural values and individual experiences. 4- **Research Methodologies**: The essential role of research methodologies in sociology will be highlighted, including quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods, experimental and comparative approaches. These methodologies allow us to uncover valuable information about behaviour, structures and social transformations while respecting ethical principles designed to protect research participants and preserve the integrity of the research. - Historical perspective**: We will also trace the historical trajectory of sociology as a dynamic discipline that adapts to an ever-changing social environment. Various perspectives will be combined to provide a holistic understanding of the social world, and inform initiatives to solve social problems and advocate for social equity. Overall, the course provides a theoretical foundation for understanding key sociological concepts and their application to the analysis and resolution of societal complexities. It will be supplemented by practical exercises in content analysis, text intelligence, etc.
