Introduction to Sociology - decoding the dynamics of social life!

Sociology is a vast field of study. In the class introduction to sociology, I shall teach about the social forces like religion, gender, class, ethnicity and so on that shape our society and us(as individuals). It will be a very interactive class involving lots of discussions and debates about sociological paradigms and ideas.

For beginners it will introduce you to history of sociology(how did this field emerge in academia?), classical sociology theories and concepts. it will also cover important sociologists, their field of work and critiques. You might like some sociology scholars, find some of their ideas/arguments not relevant or even unacceptable, this class is the platform to learn, discuss and critique!

For intermediate learners, the class will cover more of current debates and recent research developments in sociology; traditional subjects such as class, culture, families/kinship, and religion. My favorite topic is Magic, religion and science and classes on that will be pretty interesting! We shall decode Bronislaw Malinowski's essays together!

For Advance learners, this class will be more of a support system through which they can clarify doubts and have solid discussions about about progressive areas like digital society, social media, migration, and the interconnectedness of modern global society. Lots of ethnographic case studies. if you are interested to learn about the caste system in India, do take up my class as we shall have pretty interesting conversations about it. We can also deal with questions like how to make a living out of sociology?

About Me

Hey, I am Ragamalika B.A(Research) Sociology with a double minor in History and Dance from Shiv Nadar university, India. I have completed a diploma course in International Relations and I am currently a Masters Student at London School of Economics and Political Science. I study International Social and Public Policy. I have prior teaching experience and I clearly know how not to make someone feel bored while listening to lectures (I hate boring lectures myself:). Studying enough about social forces that makes the society function as it is, I also don't believe in structural training or teaching methods. There will be plenty of article and books that I shall cover and refer to take my lessons and kick start discussions but no strict or cliché methodology will be followed. Classes will be interesting not cliché!

What is sociology? An introductory course on key concepts
The course, ' What is sociology?’, is taken from a textbook. The textbook comprehensively explores sociology, aimed at both students and educators. It explores various aspects of sociology and provides a rich understanding of social structures and institutions and their impact on human behavior and the organization of society. The course follows the same lines as my textbook (which can be found on Amazon in French and English). The course is organized into 14 modules as follows: 1. Introduction to Sociology 2 . The Origins and Development of Sociology 3 . The History of Sociology 4 . Theoretical Perspectives in Sociology 5. Research Methods in Sociology 6 . Socialization and Identity 7. Social Structures and Institutions 8 . Social Stratification and Inequality 9 . Culture and Society 10 . Sociology of Religion 11 . Deviance and Crime 12 . Social Change and Social Movements 13 . The Future of Sociology 14 . Conclusion: A Reflective Journey Through Sociology Every time, the teacher starts by presenting the topic. The students are required to take notes. Then, we start the questions and answers to ensure the students understand what was said. Then, we summarize, and that ends the session. NB: There will also be a distribution of references for further reading on the subject. Overall, the course provides a theoretical foundation for understanding key sociological concepts and their application to analyze and resolve societal complexities.
