Violin lessons for advanced students / audition preparation

I am a professional violinist with almost 30 years of performing experience. Having played as an orchestra musician and concertmaster for over 15 years, I have coached a number of students and helped them prepare for exams and auditions. I also enjoy teaching basics to beginners of all ages.

In recent years, I have been a mentor and violin teacher for the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra academy and given master classes in South America and in Germany. I am a regular guest member of the exam jury at the Lucerne School of Music.

During 2018 I studied music physiology for two semesters at the Zurich Hochschule ZHdK, which gave me a very valuable insight into some often neglected physiological and psychological aspects regarding violin playing.

About Me

I was born into a musical family and started having piano lessons at the age of four. A few years later, I started learning the violin. Growing up in a family of professional musicians, it seemed completely natural to me that I wanted to become a professional violinist.

Of course that meant lots of practicing day after day. Through the years, I learned a lot about how to practice well and efficiently. It is not all about quantity, but also very much about quality of practicing. It is fascinating to see how the right input at the right time can have an immediate positive effect on someone's playing.

Master classes with Ana Chumachenco, Ida Haendel, Thomas Brandis, Mauricio Fuks, Herman Krebbers, Igor Oistrach, Joseph Silverstein.

Chamber music studies at Sarasota Music Festival (USA), Stiftung Villa Musica Mainz (Germany), Verbier Festival & Academy (Switzerland), Prussia Cove (England).

Awards: 1st prize at the international violin competition „Jeunesses Musicales“ in Bucharest 2001; scholarship holder of the Munich orchestra academy 1995 and of the German Academic Exchange Service “DAAD” 1998-2000.

Experience / Qualifications

I am the artistic director of a chamber music series in Lucerne, Switzerland. In the past, I have appeared in chamber concerts with artists such as Julia Fischer, Wen-Sinn Yang, Peter Somodari, Adrian Oetiker and James Galway.

I have always had a great interest in orchestra playing. As a member of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra student academy, I played many concerts in the 1st violins with conductors such as Lorin Maazel, Riccardo Muti, Colin Davis, Mariss Janssons, Wolfgang Sawallisch and Zubin Mehta.

From 2002-2018, I held a position as 2nd concertmaster with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, appearing regularly as 1st concertmaster in both symphony and opera performances.

Since 2011, I have been a regular guest concertmaster at the Swedish Radio Orchestra Stockholm. I have also been invited as guest concertmaster by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Bamberger Symphoniker, the Royal Opera Stockholm and the German Chamber Orchestra Berlin.

Katie
Violin or piano lessons to inspire, balancing technique and musicality
I aim to strike a balance as much as possible between teaching technical skills and musicality, as of course there cannot be one without the other when learning an instrument. Lessons are a mixture of teaching and demonstrating correct posture, finger patterns or body movements, and teaching and engaging a learner with rhythm, pitch and melody, and then combining them together. I am a firm believer in tackling one aspect at a time in lessons and gradually combining it with another aspect of playing. I often include activities such as playing a note and asking the student to match my pitch or sound quality, or including musical games that can develop musical memory and rhythm. The most important aspect of learning any instrument is of course the music! Aiming to help a student find music (or if they have ideas they are welcome to bring them along!) that they love and find absorbing - this can be any genre, as long as it has a tune! I have a variety of books of different levels that I can use to help students find styles that are fun and enjoyable for them. There are technical things that need to be worked on in playing any instrument - but of fundamental importance is that the student has a feel for the music they play and a musical idea of what the end goal of any piece is.
