My classes involve a mixture of discovering poetry in its diverse forms and responding to writing exercises. All activities have the aim of expanding the student's personal relationship with this incredible art form and developing their power to self-express creatively. We will look at how poetry continues to challenge the status quo and can act as a space for connection, emotional healing and rebirth in climates of limitation and struggle. I am passionate about teaching poetry writing because I have seen how beneficial the sharing and crafting of poetry is for mental health; I want to bring this passion into people's lives and am as excited to learn from each student's insights and creations as I am to impart knowledge and feedback. I am an experienced tutor and published poet with a first-class honours degree in English and Spanish from Durham University. My anthology "Poems of Hope", on the subject of mental health, was published in 2019 to fundraise for Mind UK. I am currently studying part-time postgraduate course in teaching creative writing with Cambridge University to complement writing and teaching. I have 5+ years of experience tutoring English and have devised and delivered poetry workshops for vulnerable adults as well as tutored creative writing throughout the pandemic. I have also spent a year working with SEN students in secondary education as a teaching assistant. I welcome teenagers and adults who identify as neurodivergent, disabled or struggling with mental health. I hope to hear from you and look forward to journeying into poetry together.

After completing IB English Lang/Lit HL and receiving 7s in my HL Essays and IO, I am ready to help others achieve their highest potential when it comes to essay writing. We will begin with a first lesson in order to get to know each other and see whether our goals align. We will discuss what exactly you need help with and make a weekly tutoring schedule. This is especially important when it comes to planning and writing HL essays and IOs. I will provide you with feedback, help you structure your work and read through it with you. I am an admissions consultant specialising in guiding students to apply to universities or graduate schools in the US and the UK. Most of my clients are third or fourth-year undergraduates or professionals with a few years of work experience applying to graduate schools. My teaching philosophy is to be a mentor, friend, and sometimes emotional support counsellor for my clients. The admissions process can be daunting, especially for students with little or no experience writing personal statements and academic essays. I guide my students on a journey of self-discovery as they explore what they want to study and why. When I am working with a student on crafting their personal statement, I will first ask my student to brainstorm ideas. We will discuss what to keep and what to delete when we are structuring the essay. I will then guide them on using the STAR method to give examples and details to demonstrate their skill or experience. The final stage is polishing the essay so it reads well and still retains the student's voice. I also coach secondary school and undergraduate students how to write academic essays. They need to first become familiar with the materials by reading extensively and writing summaries and critiques. I will then guide them on how to come up with an argument and how to structure the essay. Finally, we will add supporting details and examples to demonstrate the main points.

In these sessions I will help you to gain a better understanding of the content you are learning, as well as, help you to understand your assignment topics and how best to answer them by aiding you in building your critical thinking and essay writing abilities so that you can achieve the best possible results. I also provide proofreading and study skills.

Poetry is a unique and specialized craft, requiring a strong facility for language and a distinct poetic voice. In this class we can work on whatever you need: starting from scratch with prompts for beginning a poem, workshopping an already existing piece or pieces, or learning about formal techniques and the fundamental aspects of good poetry. Learn from an experienced student of poetry! Halli received her BA in Creative Writing from DePaul University in 2023. She is currently pursuing an MA in Poetry at Queen's University Belfast. She is a Citywide Poet Representative and former editor of DePaul Literary Magazine, Crook & Folly. She has been published in Crook & Folly ed. 42 (2022) and The Apiary ed. 8. (2025).
