All of my lessons are specifically tailored to the student, what this intends to achieve is a specific course of learning, whether that be through writing practice essays, playing educational online games, writing, and creating flashcards to help remember information, mind maps, etc. If they decide they would like to work on something specific I am very flexible and would be happy to teach! The typical length of my lesson is 60 minutes, the first 10 minutes are to ensure the student is feeling good and ready to learn, as well as to address any marking or specific questions that the student may have about the work given or school material. The second phase of my teaching includes a quick-fire round, by which I aim to engage the student by firing a few questions in order to recall key facts/takeaways from the previous lesson. After this consolidation, I build upon the previous lesson by extending the topic or leading into the next subject. Depending on the student’s ability and focus, I will either choose for them to complete a short piece of work independently or step-by-step with me (they are of course allowed to ask for help whenever!). Finally, we assess the work, tackle any other problems or questions, and then finish with a game or short educational clip. The student may be given additional homework if I feel the material was misunderstood or could be improved upon. I have experience working as a teaching assistant in primary schools from early years to year 6, my work included: organising lesson plans; teaching one-to-one and in bigger groups; administrative duties, and supporting the emotional and social needs of the student. I have only had a few students privately as I would balance them on par with my own education, however, I found this difficult to maintain due to the pandemic, therefore I have more experience with primary school years, but I can cater up to GCSEs.

I am there to support the student but believe that they will retain knowledge far better if they take the lead on some sessions. - Lessons are targeted at GCSE and A Level students, but I am willing to also tutor KS2 and KS3 too. - I have previous tuition experience working with A-Level students virtually during the pandemic. I am a final year English Literature and History student at Lancaster University and I have a strong passion for teaching the subjects I love! I believe that the humanities are fascinating subjects and would love to help students find enjoyment in them during their academic life. Based on previous tutoring experience, I have helped students work their way up the grade boundaries whilst also discovering a newfound love for their subject! As important as subject content is, I am a big mental health advocate, and so will work with students on stress management, exam techniques and the like in order to make the process of exams and academic stress slightly more manageable. :) On top of tutoring in English, History and Sociology, I love to dance in my spare time as well as blog, read, and write for my uni newspaper.

Trusted teacher: Having been home-tutored (as opposed to attending a regular school) throughout GCSEs and A Levels, I have a deep personal experience of works and what doesn't in regard to tutoring. The most important aspect of teaching for me is flexibility: I strive to adjust my teaching style according to how you like to learn, whether that is through images, through debate, through listening, or through games (which is still totally possible at A Level!). I think the best way to teach is to start with the student. What do you find difficult? What do you enjoy? What motivates you? Having answered these questions, I will then tailor the subject matter to the student. I can cater for almost any historical interest you may have, whether that is the ancient Spartans, the history of medieval Islamic philosophy, or twentieth century Indian politics. The average length of a lesson is around an hour. The first few minutes will centre around getting to know you or your child, followed by a a tailored lesson on an area both of us feel best suits your needs, and finally ending in a game-based revision of what has been covered. How do I help with GCSEs? I teach the general historical narrative in an engaging way through interactive games to provide the general background to students. I help students develop the core elements required in an A* IGCSE/GCSE performance: an understanding of causation, historical analysis, and historical evidence. In basic terms, why stuff happens and how we can judge if it really did happen! I also tackle the most common barrier to excellent exam performance: essay-writing technique. Throughout I ensure that students become or remained enthused by history through including unusual characters and stories that would not be included in the classroom, often the icing on the cake that secures an A* grade. How do I help with A Levels? I negotiate the difficult transition from GCSE to A Level History by encouraging students to dive deeper into the past and the issues one confronts when studying it. I help students with the hardest element in the transition, essay-writing technique, by giving detailed feedback on their essays and tips on planning. I advise students how they can quickly and effectively respond to complex primary and secondary sources. I also can teach more specifically to ancient history (having achieved an A* in Ancient History A Level alongside the standard History A Level), covering Sparta, Athens, and Rome. How do I help with Oxbridge applications? I encourage students to reflect deeply on the study of history in a way that I have learnt while at Cambridge. I inform students of the type of questions they will be asked at interview and how they can tackle them. I help students preparing for the Aptitude Tests by broadening their horizons of study to areas and times that excite Oxbridge fellows.
